Although it is now in ruins, the Rocca di Caldè (Caldè fort) still remains the symbol of Castelveccana’s homonymous hamlet. A votive lighthouse was built in honour of the fallen, where this majestic fort once stood. The site is also worth visiting for the magnificent view from the sheer cliffs over the waters of Lake Maggiore and for the scenery of the surrounding landscape.
How to get to the Rocca di Caldè
The easy path leading to the summit can be climbed by anyone in just over 15 minutes. The path is quite scenic and each step of the way is accompanied by increasingly broad views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
The starting point is S. Pietro, a hamlet of Castelveccana, located to the north. Cars are parked in the little square next to the church and the journey is continued from here on foot. Staying on the right side of the Church of San Pietro, road Capitano Barassi comes to an end. This is where the footpath starts. Several crosses are encountered along the way, which like the final obelisk, are dedicated to those fallen in all wars. The path is also flanked by exclusive homes surrounded by large private gardens.
If you start out from Caldè, you reach the 13th-century Church of Santa Veronica. It was built leaning out in a lower section of the rocca and offers a charming view of the hamlets of Castello and Caldè, whose fortification was once included. The little church has valuable frescoes, which have been recently restored.
The Rocca di Caldè today
The rocca (dating back to the Middle Ages) was conquered and demolished by the Swiss in 1513. Unfortunately, only the moat used as a defence and certain sections of the ancient wall remain of this majestic castle. Its position dominated the lake. The headland is also quite visible from the lake, for example on the ferry from Laveno to Verbania and back.
