Centovalli is a Swiss municipality in the Canton Ticino established in 2009 following the consolidation of the municipalities of Intragna, Borgnone and Palagnedra.
It rises in the homonymous valley along the Melezza Stream (Melezzo Stream in the Italian part), which starts in Intragna and ends at the Italian-Swiss border of Camedo, where it is named Vigezzo Valley. The short section between Intragna and the confluence of the Melezza (which also includes the Isorno Stream in Intragna) and Maggia streams is named terre di Pedemonte (lands of Piedmont).
Tourism in Centovalli: the Centovallina or Vigezzina Line
The entire valley is a wonderful area and has many easy paths unwinding in uncontaminated nature. The whole valley is crossed by the historic Trenino Blu (Blue Train). The line, which was inaugurated in 1923, is known in Switzerland as Centovallina or Trenino delle Centovalli, and in Italy as Vigezzina. It connects the Swiss city of Locarno with the Italian city of Domodossola and for the most part offers passengers marvellous scenery during the ride.
Navigazione Laghi and Ferrovia delle Centovalli offer a circular boat, trenino and train day tour package amongst lake and mountains. It starts in Arona, arrives in Locarno by boat (lunch on board), continues to Domodossola on the Trenino delle Centovalli, and returns to Arona by train (Italian railways).
Intragna is the most important town in Centovalli, and has an ancient narrow nucleus around the parish church, which is characterised by a very high bell tower (69 m). A cable car connects Intragna with the mountainside-village of Costa.
The mountain in Centovalli
Mountain lovers can discover the beauty of Mount Comino, a very charming and popular place with many opportunities for excursions. The Church of Madonna della Segna (1,176 m asl) is also worth visiting. Mount Comino is easy to reach thanks to a cable car, whose departure station is in Verdasio (where the Trenino delle Centovalli also stops).
