Feriolo is just 3 km north of Baveno (of which it is currently a hamlet). Running alongside the lake, Feriolo is pleasantly nestled on the shore, marking the turn enclosing the Gulf of Borromeo to the west. Behind it, the landscape spans towards the Ossola mountains and valleys, while there is a view of the gulf from the lakeside promenade: the coast of Verbania to the left, and the one of Baveno to the right.
Feriolo and Valdossola
In the past, products from Valdossola were embarked in Feriolo, in particular wood, coal and hay. Even the Borromeo family attempted to breed horses here to be used to transport material.
Visiting Feriolo
In the past, the settlement extended further along the Strada del Sempione, but a slide in 1867 pushed several homes into the lake, killing 14 people. The ruins of a medieval tower are in a dominate position to the left of the road. They were perhaps part of a castle mentioned in the early 13th century. The short lakeside promenade still has the old buildings as a backdrop, making this a pleasant place to stop. In the centre of town is the Oratory of S. Carlo, which was built in the 17th century and made a parish church in 1831. The little Church of Madonna della Scarpia, home to a 16th-century effigy of the Madonna, is out of town on a detour on the left of the road to Gravellona. The building was renovated at the beginning of the 18th century.
Tourism and camping in Feriolo
There are several campgrounds on the lakeshore between Feriolo (hamlet of Baveno) and Fondotoce (hamlet of Verbania), which are separated by the mouth of the Toce River.
