Magadino is the most northern of the 9 towns incorporated in 2010 under a single administration: the Municipality of Gambarogno. These include Gerra Gambarogno, whose descriptive sheet also has information on Vira, San Nazzaro, Piazzogna and Indemini.
The so-called Riviera of Gambarogno is that section of Swiss lakeshore extending from the border with Italy on the left lakeshore, to the foot of Mount Ceneri.
Tourism in Magadino
Magadino was an active harbour and centre of traffic for inland Switzerland as early as the beginning of the 16th century. It was the first navigation boat terminus starting in 1826, and with the opening to vehicles of the San Gottardo road, it became the terminus station for stagecoaches. This economic fortune was transmitted to the architecture in the hotels and buildings, which were influenced by the Liberty style.
Places to visit: 19th-century villa casa Ghisler (Ghisler house), a beautiful example of Milanese neoclassicism designed by architect Giacomo Moraglia for the Ghisler family, and the Parish Church of San Carlo.
Of exceptional local ecological interest are the Bolle di Magadino, a popular protected area with particularly rich flora and fauna set in an unforgettable background far from the intervention of man.
Events in Magadino
Standing out for class and prestige among the various events organised in Magadino is the International Festival of Organ Music, held in July.
