The Sanctuary of Madonna del Boden is in the mountains behind the little town of Ornavasso, precisely in that area called Boden.
History of the Sanctuary of Madonna del Boden
Before becoming a sanctuary, it was a consecrated oratory built on the ruins of a previous little chapel. Towards the middle of the 17th century, the oratory was expanded and the choir, two chapels, sacristy and a portico were added. The side naves and restored altar date back to the middle of the following century. Today the building has three naves separated by four arches. However, the event making the Sanctuary of Madonna del Boden famous dates back to 1528.
The miracle of Madonna del Boden
Up until the 15th century, the place of the actual sanctuary was known for the image of the Virgin painted on the wall, which was venerated by the locals. Later, the news of a miracle continued to attract many pilgrims and thus the ancient oratory required expanding.
According to tradition, a shepherdess from Ornavasso fell asleep after bringing her sheep to graze the night of 7 September. When she awoke, it was night and her sheep had run away. She started looking for the flock and fell into a very deep precipice. Worried about herself and her sheep, she turned to the Madonna for guidance. And so a light from the little chapel in Boden kept her unharmed and guided her to the area close to the painting; she was surrounded by her sheep. Happy, she thanked the Madonna and asked her to lead her home. The search for her in town had already started and the people involved in it saw her arriving surrounded by a vivid light.
Starting 8 September 1530, the feast of the Madonna of Boden, or of Miracles, began being celebrated (the same date Christian tradition celebrates the Nativity of Mary). The painting in the original chapel deteriorated over time and was later replaced with a small statue (30 cm high) depicting the Coronation of the Madonna.
The tradition is still alive and strong today and the feast on 8 September celebrated at the Sanctuary of Madonna del Boden is certainly worth attending.
