The The Church of Santa Marta is in the old town centre of Invorio. Once the town’s parish church, it was replaced by the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, which took on this role despite its location outside the built-up area.
History of the Church of Santa Marta
The Church of Santa Marta certainly dates back prior to the 11th century and was later renovated during the 18th century, which is also when the access portico was added. The task entrusted to the church and its parish priest was not simple, considering he was to ensure participation in the sacraments by all believers scattered throughout the large surrounding territory. Cardinal Taverna only founded the coadjutorship in Invorio in 1618; this brotherhood was given the task of lightening the load of the parish priest. In 1750, the Brothers of Santa Marta expanded the church and built their oratory to the side of the altar.
Works of art at the Church of Santa Marta
It was the same brothers who placed a small statue of Santa Marta holding a pail full of water, in the golden wooden niche.
The chapel named after Mary, which was renovated in 1735, contains an ancient, charming painting dating back to the early 16th century and depicting the Madonna on Throne with Child, to which the population attributed miraculous powers several times over the course of the centuries. The statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Julius were added between 1921-1924.
Today, the Committee for Santa Marta takes care of the church renovations, which are supported by generous donations from locals.
