The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, together with the Church of Santo Stefano and the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista, is part of the religious complex in Domo, a hamlet of Porto Valtravaglia.
History of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta
The ancient Church of Santa Maria Assunta was mainly in Romanesque style and developed along a single nave. According to documents, it certainly dates back prior to the 12th century, but was significantly renovated over the course of the centuries. The small window on the right wall facing the piazza is from the original church.
In 1583, Saint Charles Borromeo consecrated the high altar in honour of the Blessed Virgin.
Only two centuries later, the church was already semi-abandoned and two experts Francesco and Silvestro Giorgetti from Brissago were appointed to examine the situation and propose some solutions. This is how the renovated church – as we see it today - was opened in 1795.
Inside the Church of Santa Maria Assunta
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta has several quality frescoes inside. In addition to the high altar, two other altars are also painted: the one on the left wall is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary and the one on the opposite wall, to Saint Anthony the Abbot. The current shapes of the two chapels where the altars are located date back to the second half of the 18th century.
The church is also home to a precious organ originating from the Collegiate Church in Castiglione Olona. It dates back to the beginning of the 17th century and was restored later.
