The picturesque Church of San Giorgio is close to Sarigo, a delightful hamlet in the hinterland of Castelveccana, north of Laveno. This Lombard-Romanesque church dates back to the first half of the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, it attracted many inhabitants from the surrounding valleys who attributed miraculous healing powers to its baptismal font.
Church of San Giorgio: outside…
The first thing that stands out even for the less attentive is the original location of the entrance on the long side and not on the short one, which was usually the case. The unusual choice is in truth due to the need to adapt to the surrounding territory. The building, made with precisely-bevelled stone, still has two elements of particular importance as they originally appeared: the massive bell tower enriched with blind arches, pilasters and two-light windows, and the apse.
... and the inside
The apse, preciously decorated and framed by hanging arches obtained from blocks of stone, indicates an influence by the masters from Como. There are two single-light windows under the single-block arches, each divided into two by a small column. Positioned asymmetrically with respect to the body of the building, it reveals the existence of a previous structure.
Little semi-columns enhanced with interesting capitals rotate around the walls creating harmony and contrast with the chromatism of the different stones. The structure (originally with a single nave) was modified in the 17th century, which resulted in the transformation of a pre-existing portico into a second nave.
