The Luino Civic Museum of Archaeology and Paleontology has a small municipal art gallery with a collection of canvases by local artists, and a paleontological section with fossil finds discovered in the area. In fact, Luino is an archaeological area and much proof from the Bronze Age has been discovered here.
The Luino Civic Museum: history
The official birth of the museum dates back to 1977, the year when renovations were completed on Palazzo Verbania, thanks to the perseverance of Pietro Astini, the president of the Civico Istituto di Cultura Popolare (Civic Institute of Popular Culture). He was able to put together a significant amount of archaeological, documentary and artistic material (frescoes removed from local sites) and was driven by a strong will to ensure this treasure tightly connected with the town’s history was not lost, but was rather valorised.
The museum in Luino and its themes
The museum has three halls: a small municipal art gallery, an archaeological section and a collection of minerals and fossils.
Important paintings include detached frescoes, including a Suckling Madonna and a Crucifixion from the 15th-16th centuries, and there are also valuable works of contemporary art.
The section concerning mineralogy and paleontology has fossils discovered both in the area of upper Verbano and in countries outside Europe, including trilobites from Africa from 550 million years ago.
In addition to the local archaeological finds, museum exhibits include others from the Sahara Desert such as axes, tips, arrows, blades and objects dating back to the Neolithic period.
