The Borromeo fortress in Angera has been home to the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo (Museum of Dolls and Toys) since 1988. This one-of- a-kind museum - the first in Italy and one of the most historic in Europe - originally collected the history from two centuries of a timeless toy, in 13 halls: the doll.
From the Museo della Bambola…
The first group of dolls in the original Museo della Bambola contained dolls from the Borromeo family collection and was expanded over the years to include examples from non-European countries (Bambole dal Mondo section) and celluloid dolls. The mounting follows historic and geographical criteria while illustrating this old toy’s transformation from the 1700's to date, and even collecting accessories and outfits, miniature furniture and other iconographic material. Dolls made with papier-mâché, porcelain, fabric and wood or glass: these precious personalities from everyone’s life – whether Italian, European or from any other part of the world – file past the eyes of visitors of all ages.
... to the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo
A tour of Rocca di Angera (Angera fort) goes hand in hand with a tour of the museum, which is located in the castle halls from different eras including the Visconti wing (the oldest) and the Borromeo wing, whose windows overlook the lake. It won’t be hard to make a brief stop at the ancient kitchens or ceremonial halls along the way. The museum once had a second exhibit dedicated to children’s clothing and comprising a collection with pieces for the most part from the last century (also from the House of Borromeo). Over the last few years, the Museo della Bambola has become the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo. In fact, an entire French collection arrived in Angera from Tours, of toys and robots – true mechanics and engineering treasures from past centuries and now constituting the Automi (robots) section.
