The Arona Museum of Archaeology (inaugurated in 1997) is the ideal final stop along the itinerary of the Mercurago Lagoni Nature Park. Central Piazza San Graziano was selected as the museum location, and more particularly, the 19th-century indoor market building.
The exhibit at the Museum of Arona
The archaeological finds from the territory of Arona and the lower Verbano area are in a collection here in a lengthy chronological span from the Bronze Age (17th- to 13th-centuries BC) to the Post-Renaissance period (excavations of the Arona hospital).
The exhibit unfolds according to a themed historic plan: the first display cases show some items (including the well-known wheel mould) from the important pile-dwelling area on the Mercurago Great Lakes, which was active throughout most of the Bronze Age.
Finds from the Neolithic period include a green-stone axe blade that was faced and sharp on one end (found in Corciago, a hamlet of Nebbiuno). Continuing along the virtual journey are the grave goods from the Golasecca civilisation from Castelletto Ticino and from the area of the great lakes. Vases that are still intact can be admired here, as bronze ornaments such as fibulae, rings, pendants, belt buckles and hooks. There are also many common pottery fragments.
The Celtic necropolis (3rd- to 1st-centuries BC) recently identified in Dormelletto is also well-represented with rich grave goods including the well-known earthenware vessel and several charming bracelets. Finally, there is a unique, rare example of a bronze ankle band.
There are also several finds from the Roman period (glassware and earthenware) recovered from one of the two local necropolises discovered to date. These include the little statue of a matron - which the museum has taken on as its logo – and a valuable altar dedicated to matrons.
