Castelletto Sopra Ticino

Castelletto Sopra Ticino, or more simply Castelletto Ticino, is a little town with 10,000 inhabitants which is well known for its fantastic, exceptional geographical position bordered by the Ticino River, Lake Maggiore and the hills. These unique and favourable characteristics have allowed human settlements to develop here as early as the Bronze Age, as demonstrated by a necropolis from the 13th century BC discovered by chance at Glisente in 1950. The area is full of with finds, as seen in the surrounding towns such as Golasecca on the Lombard bank of the Ticino River.

Castelletto Sopra Ticino and tourism

Given the ancient nature of the first settlements here, several archaeological finds have been uncovered from different periods in Castelletto Sopra Ticino. For example, the city park G. Sibilia is home to a majestic tomb dating back to the Iron Age. There is also the Church of Santa Maria d’Egro, which was rebuilt during the Baroque period, and the Oratory of Sant’Ippolito in Glisente, with its marvellous 15th- and 16th-century frescoes.

After the second Punic War in 201 BC, it fell under Roman domination and was proclaimed a Latin colony. During those times, the Ticinus waterway acquired importance… The river flows from San Gottardo, is a tributary into Lake Maggiore in Switzerland, flows out of it precisely at Castelletto and after some 248 km, flows into the Po River as an estuary near Pavia.

The vast region of Castelletto Ticino, that charming basin stretching out to the foot of Mount Bosco between lake and river, has several wooded areas and lush plains irrigated by streams and less important riverlets, and is part of the Ticino Valley Nature Park.

Events and entertainment in Castelletto Sopra Ticino

Several events are organised throughout the year such as food & wine tasting or enjoyable music events. The most important date in the year is certainly 17 January, when the town’s patron saint, St. Anthony the Abbot, is celebrated.

Lastly, evening entertainment is ensured by several well-known local clubs. The most important agricultural activity in past centuries has left room for today’s industrial and commercial development. In fact, in addition to entertainment, the long straight local trunk road Statale del Sempione is an attractive business and entertainment pole for the entire area (there are many movie theatres, bowling lanes, shopping centres, restaurants and shops in the area).
