If you’re spending your holidays in Stresa, you certainly won't be bored between a trip on Lake Maggiore and a stroll in town but you could liven up your stay in the lake areas with a beautiful excursion nearby.
For example, you could visit Gignese. As it is located on the slopes of Mount Mottarone, this little town has a marvellous view and moreover, is the seat of a truly original and unique museum: the Museo dell’Ombrello. Leaving town is the beautiful and rightfully famous Giardino Alpinia (botanical garden). It’s worth touring and getting lost amongst the scents and fragrances of the rare plants taken care of here.
Continuing along provincial roads 39 and 34 leads to Carpugnino and then Brovello – a ruined little town with lots of culture. The Church of San Donato in Carpugnino dating back to the 1100's is noteworthy. Brovello is between two rushing streams that have dug out the surrounding valleys. If you love sports fishing, bring your equipment!
From Brovello, take provincial road 34; after 5 minutes you’ll be in Massino Visconti, an ancient built-up area that still has a castello Visconteo [Visconti castle (unfortunately almost completely abandoned today)]. It’s surrounded by uncontaminated vegetation where it’s a pleasure to get lost on long strolls in the hills – or maybe even go horseback riding!
To go back to Stresa, head towards the lake and then take provincial road 33 running along Lake Maggiore.
