Tenero-Contra is a municipality in the Canton Ticino extending from the hills to the shore of Lake Maggiore. Although it is a well-known industrial centre, it became famous due to tourism. Just think its summer population is 13,000 – 10,000 of whom are tourists!
The town is not very far from other renowned Swiss tourist destinations such as Muralto, Locarno and the Riviera of Gambarogno, which are easy to reach.
Given the large influx of visitors in the summer, the little town of Tenero has all the facilities necessary to ensure a relaxing holiday. Cool off and have fun at the Lido and on the white sand beaches – an area with many internationally-acclaimed campgrounds and tourist services.
Verzasca Valley begins here which is perfect for excursions. There is a hiking path in the lower section (called Sentierone) while the summits are home to the Via Alta della Verzasca (Upper Way of Verzasca). The Municipality of Tenero-Contra also comprises part of Lake Vogorno, an artificial basin created after the dam was built in the 1960’s. One of the highest bungee jumping facilities is located here.
Tenero is also home to an important sports centre (Centro sportivo nazionale della gioventù), a true paradise for sports enthusiasts (open year-round).
Tenero also has a valuable artistic heritage: the Oratory of Fraccia in Contra, and the Matasci Art Gallery and its Museo del Vino (Museum of Wine) are interesting and worth visiting.
The Parish Church of San Bernardo da Chiaravalle in Contra is also worth touring.
