Located at the mouth of the Erno Stream, Lesa is a typical small lakeside village located on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore between Meina and Belgirate, at the border of the province of Novara.
It was once a thriving agricultural town and especially excelled in vine and fruit growing. Later, as élite tourism developed, the cultivations disappeared and were replaced by the marvellous villas characterising the landscape today, especially along the shores, in the heart of the two lakeside areas: Villa Lesa and Solcio.
Tourism in Lesa
The extraordinary inlet forming the picturesque Gulf of Lesa fascinated celebrities the likes of Alessandro Manzoni and Count of Cavour Camillo Benso, who used to spend their holidays and relaxing moments here. There are several villas, however one stands out among the others for its beauty and history: Villa Noseda. Heading south are the ruins of a castle dating back to the 11th century.
Lesa and its villages
Lesa comprises four villages: Villa Lesa, Comnago, Solcio and Calogna. Calogna and Comnago are two pleasant little towns nestled among the surrounding hills. Comnago is home to the Church of San Giulio, whose Romanesque bell tower is still intact despite the passing of time. Solcio – located in the gulf that has formed to the south of the mouth of the Erno Stream – is home to the Church of San Rocco, which was built in the mid 1800's based on a project by Bartolomeo Franzosini. The town is also well known for the homonymous shipyards. Villa Lesa is the residential centre, against the hills, and the ideal starting point for relaxing scenic strolls in the direction of nearby Comnago and even higher-up to Calogna.
