Premeno is a small town in upper Verbano encompassed by green meadows and surrounding conifers. It is approximately 800-900 metres asl on the slopes of the mountains to the north of Verbania and behind Ghiffa. It also comprises the hamlets of Pian di Sole, Pollino and Esio.
Premeno in history
The finds uncovered in the area indicate that man settled in this fascinating area as early as the Bronze Age.
Tombs and Roman grave goods from the 1st century AD were discovered in 1950 near the Oratory of San Salvatore (1645), indicating the Romans had settled in the area. During the Medieval period, Premeno is mentioned along with the villages under the influence of the Visconti family.
Premeno is well-known for its luxuriant surrounding nature, to which it also owes its name: the place name appears to come from pratus amoeunus, or luxuriant meadow. In addition, its unique position in a closed basin amongst the hills protects it from the cold winds thus ensuring a mild climate year-round.
This is why the many exclusive villas enhancing the landscape were built here during the 1900’s.
Tourism and entertainment in Premeno
The hamlet of Pian di Sole (approximately 1,000 metres asl) on the same road to Pian Cavallo or Piancavallo (hamlet of Oggebbio) is the ideal starting point for excursions and sports: the town is home to beautiful golf course Golf Piandisole.
The little, characteristic hamlet of Esio (independent until 1927) is also interesting to visit, where old forms of traditional crafts still survive.
The most beautiful villa in the area – Villa Bernocchi – is now municipal property and is often used to host some of the most important events such as exhibits and concerts.
Premeno also has summer holiday camps in its numerous mountains. They were organised at the beginning of the 1900’s and resulted in the town being referred to as a paradise for children.
