Trarego Viggiona is a small mountain municipality located in a favoured, sunny position on Lake Maggiore, at an altitude of 700-800 metres asl, just a few kilometres from Cannero. It belongs to the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and encompasses three small towns: Trarego, Cheglio and Viggiona. The road leading to it continues to Colle Pass at over 1,200 metres and then descends to the south towards Verbania.
Tourism in Trarego Viggiona
The entire area surrounding Trarego Viggiona is rural and it’s wonderful to take a walk down one of the many paths through the woods and to discover the simple wonders left behind by this ancient world. Ronchi can still be seen here: This is an old type of terracing where vineyards where cultivated and the animals were brought to graze in the winter.
Viggiona is home to Chiesa Vecchia close to the cemetery. This is an old Romanesque church that has been declared a national monument. Cheglio has kept its old aspect of rural village characterised by narrow alleys amidst stone dwellings.
Curiosities and entertainment in Trarego Viggiona
Several festivals liven up life in Trarego Viggiona, many of which are associated with food & wine and local folklore. Particularly dear to inhabitants is the Festival of San Martino, the town’s patron saint.
Mention must be made of the fact that in 2008 the municipality was awarded the Silver Medal for Civil Merit. This is an important acknowledgement of the courage and moral dignity demonstrated by the inhabitants of these places during the years of the Resistance. 25 February 1945, Trarego was the stage of a massacre of partisans.
In 2006, the Museum of Tactile Natural Sciences of the Lake and Mountain was established. This exhibit is dedicated to the fascinating territory and its surroundings – from beds of reeds to high altitudes, woods and mountain pastures.
