Vergiate is a Lombard municipality with almost 9,000 inhabitants located on trunk road Statale del Sempione, just a few kilometres from the Ticino River and Lake Maggiore. Its vast territory belongs to the province of Varese and borders with Golasecca and Somma Lombardo, while it reaches Lake Comabbio to the north. This vastness is due to the union (in 1969) under a single municipality of what were once five different municipalities: Cimbro, Corgeno, Cuirone, Sesona and Vergiate. Once famous for building airplanes (at the Aermacchi headquarters), today it’s home to the factories that build the well-known Agusta helicopters.
Tourism in Vergiate
There are two very interesting churches in Vergiate's old town centre. The 14th-century Church of Santa Maria Assunta has a single nave and is a typical example of poor Romanesque design: few decorations a little architectural impressiveness. The other is the Parish Church of San Martino, which was built at the end of the 19th century and is now being used for exhibits and concerts. Its valuable wooden altar was recently restored, while the votive altar dedicated to Dio Silvano was obviously walled up and uncovered more recently.
Events and entertainment in Vergiate
Vergiate is also well known for its quality food: genuine and simple. An occasion not to be missed involving tasting its delightful local food & wine is the Festa del Bosco delle Capre (Festival of the Woods of the Goats) organised in the homonymous town, where in addition to good food, there is also cheerful music and dancing. It’s generally celebrated between 10-20 August. However, there are many other occasions throughout the entire year.
Vergiate is easy to access thanks to motorway Autostrada dei Laghi, and certainly a starting point for numerous strolls and excursions. The hamlet of Corgeno leads to the shore of Lake Comabbio; following the Sempione trunk road for just a few kilometres takes you to Sesto Calende. Only 20 km separate Vergiate from Varese on the opposite side.
