In search of the Culture of Golasecca

The Culture of Golasecca is a very old civilisation that had one of its epicentres in the area between Golasecca, Castelletto Sopra Ticino and Sesto Calende. If you love archaeology or are simply interested in it, take a fascinating little trip to discover these towns and the evidence from past times.

The cromlechs and the Museum of Archaeology

Golasecca is probably the area with the most archaeological finds and thus a perfect starting point for this trip, which follows the Ticino River and leads to the mouth of Lake Maggiore. Very interesting cromlechs are scattered throughout the area, and also burial urns and grave goods. The local Museum of Archaeology contains several finds and a wealth of useful information.

Castelletto Sopra Ticino

Castelletto Sopra Ticino is after the bridge heading towards Lake Maggiore. The most obvious sign of the ancient civilisation is the majestic tomb dating back to the Iron Age. It is in the Sibilia city park and is easy to reach.

Sesto Calende Civic Museum of Archaeology

Cross the road again and take provincial road 698 to get to your final destination on this trip. You will arrive in Sesto Calende in about 10 minutes. This little town is home to the Civic Museum of Archaeology. The museum has many finds and evidence of ancient times and is the most important one dedicated to the Culture of Golasecca.

After this cultural trip, you may want to relax. Head towards the Ticino National Park where you can admire the majestic profile of Mount Rosa.
