Access to the Baroffio Museum and to the Sanctuary of the Sacro Monte sopra Varese (recently renovated) is from the little square in front of the sanctuary. Owned by the sanctuary, the museum was established in 1929 following a donation by Baron G. Baroffio dall’Aglio. It is situated in a building designed by Ludovico Pogliaghi (artist, sculptor and set designer, 1857-1950).
The exhibit at the Baroffio Museum
The elegant halls at the Baroffio Museum display the founder’s collections and also liturgical objects and archaeological finds donated by Monsignor L. Lanella, a Marian collection of contemporary sacred art and valuable objects donated by the congregation to the sanctuary. In addition to Chinese paintings, silver items, vestments, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, coins, medals, pottery, and Lombard paintings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, we also point out the gold-brocade antependium donated by Ludovico the Moor and Beatrice d’Este in 1494, and the antependium also referred to as being Leonardesque because it bears a replica of the Virgin of the Rocks.
Paintings in the Baroffio Museum
The most important paintings include The Visitation by Bolognese artist G. C. Procaccino (1574-1625), Angel draft drawing for fresco by P.F. Mazzucchelli, also called the Morazzone (1573-1626, he is also responsible for the frescoes in a chapel of the Rosary), Flight into Egypt draft drawing for fresco by C.F. Nuvolone (1609-1662) who painted the frescoes in the Sacro Monte of Orta, and Zingara (Bohemian girl) with timbrel by Flemish artist M. Sweerts (1624-1664).
