Ronco sopra Ascona is a small Swiss municipality with an incomparable view of the Verbano area and the Isole di Brissago (Brissago Islands), which in fact do not solely belong to the Municipality of Brissago, but also to that of Ronco. It is located on the western shores of Lake Maggiore approximately halfway between the border with Italy and Ascona. A fisherman’s village in ancient times, it is now a popular tourist destination embellished with magnificent, exclusive villas surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Taking the ferry from the little harbour in Ronco sopra Ascona to tour the marvellous Isole di Brissago just a short ride away is simple and very enjoyable.
In town, the 15th-century Church of San Martino can be admired. The frescoes in the choir are very interesting and depict an allegory of the months of the year (just recently uncovered and restored). Aside from their artistic value, the frescoes are also a significant demonstration of the valley’s ancient fertility and its hardworking inhabitants.
Just a short distance away is the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, a baroque building located in the town’s largest piazza.
The Oratory of Madonna del Pozzuolo (particularly dear to locals) is located in a scenic position in the mountains. The reason for such affection is comprehensible when considering that the sanctuary is the arrival point for the Santa Croce procession, a rite that has been repeated annually since 1583 - the time of the plague.
Many itineraries branch off in the oddest directions throughout the territory of Ronco sopra Ascona. Several of these are certainly fascinating because they follow paths with a fantastic view of the lake and the surrounding area.
Every year between Easter and Pentecost at the Church of San Martino, the San Martino concerts are organised. They are now one of the town’s most important cultural events and even attract music enthusiasts from distant regions.
