Tronzano Lago Maggiore is a small Lombard municipality located in the province of Varese on the shores of the lake after which its gets its name, precisely at the slopes of Mount Borgna. Only Pino separates it (to the north) from Switzerland. The ancient village rises in the hilly area of town, where the first dwellings were built. It’s a true balcony over the lake. Homes and villas are scattered close to the lakeshores.
There are other towns in addition to the original nucleus of Tronzano. Those on the side of the lake are Ronco Scigolino, Canovi and Poggio; the latter is connected to Tronzano by a marvellous promenade. The mountain side is occupied by the town of Monti di Bassano. The interesting Church of Santa Maria Assunta is in Bassano, next to a Romanesque bell tower.
The eastern shore of Lake Maggiore (to the north of Lavena, from Castelveccana to Luino, then Maccagno and Tronzano a Pino) is characterised by strong winds: the Inverna (afternoon wind from the south) and the Tramontana (morning wind from the north). This is the perfect place for windsurfing which, together with swimming, are the main water sports in the local waters - especially in Canovi, which has the most facilities.
Those who prefer activities on land can take a stroll down one of the many paths passing through Tronzano. Several excursions lead to the Bassano Mountains, Mount Borgna and Lake Delio.
