The town of Suna is the first one overlooking the Gulf of Borromeo on the north shores. After having run alongside the indentation of Lake Maggiore from Baveno to Feriolo, visitors leave trunk road Statale Sempione and after Fondotoce, sheltered by the first slopes of the mountains and following the lakeshore, they enter the heart of Verbania and its various towns. The first is Suna, followed by Pallanza, and Intra is past the headland.
The town of Suna with its ancient medieval nucleus is now joined with the city of Verbania in a series of eclectic villas and luxuriant gardens. The lakeshore, enriched with magnolias and privets, has a marvellous scenic view of the gulf, Baveno and Isola Madre (Madre Island). The view from the village's little harbour spans over Pallanza up to Isolino San Giovanni (the Islet of San Giovanni).
The most well-known monuments also overlook the lake: the 12th-century Oratory of Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano, which is also known for a rocky pictogram now interpreted as the incision of the famous game Gioco del mulino, the Church of Santa Lucia built in the 16th century, and Palazzo Cioja, formerly a municipal seat and the rare example of a 17th-century aristocratic building, which unlike most others, was not renovated in the 19th century.
